Job description :
Consistently ranked as one of the leading universities in the UK, Plymouth has a strong record of excellence, enterprise and innovation across its teaching and research activities and is distinguished by its long-term engagement with business and the community. With around 30,000 students throughout the South West, the University is one of the largest in the UK.
The School of Marine Science and Engineering has received significant investment, over GBP 20 million this year alone, in sophisticated facilities, laboratories and equipment. With buoyant student recruitment and an expanding number of quality international partnerships, the School is looking to invest in new academic staff. The School combines four academic disciplines: mechanical and marine engineering; civil and coastal engineering; marine biology and marine science. With 120 academic and research staff, 1600 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates, it is already the largest university department of its kind in Europe.
The School has internationally excellent engineering research in marine robotics, offshore renewable energy, coastal engineering, composites and metallic materials, with access to state of the art research facilities. The excellent quality of research, teaching and training in maritime and marine science has very recently been recognised by the award of a Queen's Anniversary Prize. This distinguished award is a biennial award scheme within the UK's national honours system. It will be presented in 2012, Plymouth University's 150th anniversary year since we began as a School of Navigation.
A new marine building is under construction, which will house state of the art ocean simulation facilities for marine renewable energy and coastal engineering research, including a large wave and current basin and a new ship bridge simulator. Other facilities include survey and research vessels, ROVs and a HF Radar array for wave measurement. The University operates a supercomputing cluster, and has a committed focus on the marine environment through the Marine Institute. The University's Faculty of Science and Technology is a recipient of the Athena Silver Award for gender-equality recognition. The School of Marine Science and Engineering supports this ethos of equality and diversity and actively encourages the mentoring of new staff in their early career development.
In response to these developments the School is inviting applications from talented and dynamic individuals keen to pursue a career in this stimulating environment. In particular, we are seeking to appoint a research leader at Professorial level, contributing complementary and new research expertise that will enhance output and revenue in the strong research areas of coastal engineering and marine renewable energy. You will be proactive in identifying new themes and income streams and should have a strong track record of publication in leading journals and of attracting research funding.
Relevant undergraduate taught programmes in the School include BEng and MEng honours degrees in Civil and Coastal Engineering, and MSc programmes in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering and Marine Renewable Energy. The Coastal Engineering Research Group, (CERG), has an international reputation and in the last RAE, all of its research outputs were judged to be at least internationally recognised, with over 70% being internationally excellent or world leading. CERG is part of a larger grouping of leading researchers in the Centre for Coastal and Ocean Science and Engineering (CCOSE) which encompasses three research areas within the school; Coastal Processes, Coastal Engineering and Marine Physics.
You will be able to contribute to quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level across civil and coastal engineering subjects. You will be able to demonstrate a proven ability or the potential to lead original high quality research and complement existing expertise in areas like wave impacts, marine renewable energy, beach morphology, sediment dynamics, structural integrity and other areas of civil and coastal engineering and to contribute to the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).
Candidates from across the disciplines of civil and coastal engineering are encouraged to apply.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week, and is permanent.
