Full position for a project engineer on wave and tidal energy (Ghent University, Department of Civil Engineering)

The Department of Civil Engineering at Ghent University, Belgium, is offering a full position for a project engineer on wave and tidal energy (official appointment: scientific staff).

At the moment, alternative energy sources, e.g. wave and tidal energy, are very current.

The Civil Engineering Department of Ghent University is involved in different projects, mainly regarding wave and tidal energy, i.e.:

  1. the European project SEEWEC (Sustainable Economically Efficient Wave Energy Converter), which was a collaboration between 11 partners from 6 EU-countries, co-ordinator Prof. Julien De Rouck; this project came to an end mid 2009, but we keep on working on this subject;

  2. the project BOREAS (Belgian Ocean Energy Assessment) under the authority of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office

  3. the project Research on concrete possibilities of wave and tidal energy, more generally green energy at sea under the authority of DEME Blue Energy;

  4. collaboration between several Flemish companies for the development of one's own Flemish wave energy converter. This is a very challenging project!

As a project engineer on wave and tidal energy you will be working on the above-mentioned projects and also maybe on new projects. Furthermore you will frequently have contact with the authorities (such as FPS Economy, the European Commission), DEME, several Flemish companies, developers and manufacturers of wave energy converters, …

Your main activity will be collaborating in the project mentioned above under 4). In the first instance your responsibility will be participating in research (hydraulic aspect) and also leading this project.

Why should you apply for this job?

=> You will work in the domain of renewable energy; at the moment a very current topic (cf. various press reports in De Standaard, Technisch Weekblad, Energeia.nl, Land+Water, etc.; big enterprises which take initiative, Kyoto, EU-guidelines for renewable energy, …).

=> You will work in a young, dynamic environment with a lot of variation of projects.

Desired education

The vacancy is open to masters in engineering, preferably mechanics-electrotechnics or naval construction, possibly civil engineering. Post-doctoral candidates are also welcome.

Experience with regard to project management is an asset, but not required. Should you have the necessary experience and capacities, then it is the intention that you will lead the project stated under 4).
