- The Florida Current has been well noted for its constantly swift velocities and large mass transport. With its near proximity to large population centers (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach), it has been suggested that that harnessing the hydrokinetic current energy from the Florida Current could provide valuable power to these large population centers.
Assessing how much power is available in the Florida Current is crucial if commercial development of current turbine farms is to take place in the future; using both computer model and physically collected data, my research is focused on the hydrokinetic energy resource assessment of the Florida Current. This includes geographically pinpointing areas in the Florida Current that will be best for turbine installation, statistical evaluation of the resource and its fluctuations, understanding the cause of resource fluctuation, and comparison of computer model data to physically collected data.
