OES Executive Committee Meeting

Recently, INORE was invited to participate and present its aims and objectives at the 21st Executive Committee Meeting of the Ocean Energy Systems of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Ocean Energy Systems aims to facilitate and co-ordinate ocean energy research, development and demonstration through international co-operation and information exchange, leading to the deployment and commercialisation of sustainable, efficient, reliable, cost-competitive and environmentally sound ocean energy technologies. Presently the OES has 19 member countries. The chairman of the INORE steering committee, João Baltazar, attended the meeting and presented the network, its members, the objectives and the current and future activities. A generous sponsorship was attributed by the OES ExCo for the upcoming years, which will contribute significantly for the realisation of future INORE activities.

2012 Symposia Update

Next year INORE will not be holding one symposium, but will be holding two symposia--one in Europe and one in North America. As previously announced, the European symposium will be taking place in Denmark in May. The North American symposium will be held with the gracious support of the New England Marine Renewable Energy Center (MREC). MREC is a consortium of universities, and the INORE North American symposium will take place at one of the member universities. More information will be made available once the precise date and location of the symposia are set.
MREC Networking Event

The 3rd Annual New England Marine Renewable Energy Center Technical Conference took place in Cambridge, MA on the 7-8th of November. Of the approximately 60 presenters, 20 of the presenters were students (and 11 of them were already INORE members). On the first night of the conference, INORE organized a social event at the nearby Cambridge Brewing Company. About 15 or so people joined us, and we were able to relax and unwind after a long day at the conference.

Additionally, the next day, INORE Steering Committee Member, Alana Duerr, was able to give a short presentation about INORE, encouraging the participation of the students and industry leaders to be involved with INORE.
INORE Workshop at EWTEC 2011

In September 2011, 50 INOREans gathered for a pre-conference workshop for the EWTEC conference in Southampton, England. After traveling out to Lepe County Park, the workshop got underway.

The workshop included six key note speakers (Eoghan Maguire from Vattenfall, Sarah Caraher from Openhydro, Matthew Knight from Siemens, Pierpaolo Ricci from Tecnalia, Laurent Marquis from Wavestar, and Devorah Greaves from Sowfia), a panel session, a group activity, and a networking dinner event. The panel session allowed for the key note speakers and attendees to talk about the future of our industry, asking "Will offshore energy become a reality?" The workshop wrapped up with a wind turbine array group activity.

INORE would like to thank our key note speakers, as well as Davide and Julia for organizing such a great event!

Please take a look at the files below to see the presentations that were given at the workshop and for additional information about the INORE Workshop.

2011 INORE Symposium

Over 50 Ph.D. students and early stage researchers from around the world—representing 35 institutions—gathered in Alcoutim, Portugal for a 4-day symposium on offshore renewable energy. Set along the banks of the Guadiana River, the rolling hills adorned with wind turbines provided an idyllic backdrop for this intensive symposium. By bringing together researchers, this event—which is free of charge—helps achieve INORE’s goal of stimulating knowledge sharing and collaborative learning in a cohesive, global offshore renewable energy research community.

If you would like to learn more, check out the symposium report here:
Non-consumptive ocean recreation and potential conflicts with marine spatial planning (wave energy)

Oregon is in the midst of major changes to the way it manages use of the ocean off of its shores, including marine renewable energy development. Consideration for all stakeholder groups will contribute to defensible decisions regarding the use of ocean and coastal resources. This relies on an understanding of the various stakeholders in ocean resources, which is lacking for some groups. This research sought to improve the understanding of one such group, which to date has not been thoroughly documented: the non-consumptive recreational ocean user (NROU) community. The NROU group includes surfers, kayakers, boaters, divers, and many others, and it makes economic, cultural, and environmental contributions to Oregon’s coastal communities. Members of this group are both residents of coastal communities and visitors from other regions of Oregon and their numbers are expected to grow. This report details what we have learned from research about this group as a whole and by the subgroups that comprise this community of interest: what they require for recreation, their values and opinions, and where they are recreating. We also sought to gauge their attitudes toward alternative energy, specifically marine renewable energy, which is an emerging use and stakeholder of the ocean off of Oregon’s coast. This new ocean use has the potential to conflict with existing uses, if not carefully planned. Our study aims to provide information on NROU community to help facilitate sound ocean planning for all uses and users.
