Model Predictive Control applied to a wave energy point absorber

Abstract: Wave energy is a source of great expectations for the global energy mix: harnessing the abundant wave resource should contribute to offset the current reliance on fossil fuel imports and produce cleaner energy. As long as wave energy converters (WEC) are not competitive with wind turbines, however, wave energy is unlikely to succeed. Optimal control of WEC will be instrumental to achieve cost-effectiveness. Optimally controlled WEC will absorb more and smoother power than their conventionally controlled counterparts, without necessitating major additional cost. The two control methods for wave energy point absorbers which are most studied in the literature, reactive control and latching control, have, nonetheless, some drawbacks; better control strategies need be developed. In this article, a new control method based on Model Predictive Control is laid out. The heart of the idea is to determine, by mathematical optimization, the optimal control sequence that will yield the maximum energy absorption over some finite horizon. An estimate of the wave excitation force on the device over this horizon is used. The control method is applied to a floating cylinder, constrained to oscillate in heave only and subject to regular or irregular waves. Intermediate results from numerical simulations are presented.
